A Panchayat is a collective body of elected representatives constituted to carry out the administrative functions of Panchayati Raj institutions. In the case of a Grama Panchayat, it is the principal committee responsible for implementing the decisions of the Gram Sabha and managing day-to-day governance.The main components of a Panchayat are:President: The head of the Panchayat. History of Alangad Grama Panchayat

The origin of the name **Alangad** is believed to be derived from the word **“Alam.”** In Malayalam, *Alam* refers to **sugarcane**. Similarly, the Tamil word *Aalai* is also associated with sugarcane and sugarcane processing. Thus, **“Alangad”** can be interpreted as **“the land or grove of sugarcane.”** Historically, Alangad was well known as a centre for extensive sugarcane cultivation and jaggery production. The region enjoyed considerable fame for producing jaggery from locally cultivated sugarcane. This reputation is reflected in the writings of the renowned Malayalam poet Kunchan Nambiar, who himself referred to Alangad’s jaggery in his verse: *“Ālaṅgāṭan sharkkara yuṇḍakaḷ nālāñjaṅṅu kazhicchīṭukil...”* This literary reference stands as a testament to Alangad’s historic association with...
