History of Alangad Grama Panchayat
The origin of the name **Alangad** is believed to be derived from the word **“Alam.”** In Malayalam, *Alam* refers to **sugarcane**. Similarly, the Tamil word *Aalai* is also associated with sugarcane and sugarcane processing. Thus, **“Alangad”** can be interpreted as **“the land or grove of sugarcane.”** Historically, Alangad was well known as a centre for extensive sugarcane cultivation and jaggery production. The region enjoyed considerable fame for producing jaggery from locally cultivated sugarcane.
